Father & Son Retreat: Cut From the Rock

In Genesis 22, we read of a gut-wrenching challenge that is placed on Abraham, the father of our faith. He is asked by God to bring his promised son, Isaac, up onto a mountain where he is to sacrifice him. It’s a horrifying thought to every father that he might lose his son. But, who of us ever imagined being asked by God to sacrifice our own son? The idea is unthinkable for most of us.

Can you imagine the agony in Abraham as they walked together? Abraham walks soberly and quietly with Isaac. While making that trek up the mountain to “make a sacrifice”, a pivotal moment occurs where Isaac breaks the silence and, for a brief moment, provides a release from the tension that had to be eating Abraham alive. The break in tension only lasts for a moment, though. Isaac asks a challenging question, and Abraham is forced to deal with the reality of what is about to happen.

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

Genesis 22:7-8 NIV

You can hear the question echo through Abraham’s feeble mind. How long did he take to answer that question?

The beauty of this moment is that Abraham’s faith comes through, and his response is bold. Though his own flesh must have been crying out in these horrifying moments, Abraham’s trusting faith comes out in powerful form for Isaac to see. Abraham has only one plan and that is to be obedient to his own Heavenly Father. Abraham allowed Father to work out all of the rest of the details while he simply obeyed. What a powerful example to set for his son! What a powerful example for us to see!

We’ve all had moments as fathers with our boys that were similar, even if they didn’t seem so drastic. Our boys all have serious questions, but all too often we miss the deeper need to be in a place where faith dictates our responses. Unfortunately, it seems most fathers remain unaware of how pivotal their role is in these moments. Some aren’t even present for the moment. Most fathers seem to be unaware of how serious their role before the LORD is to raise sons who walk by faith in the Living God.

How many of us even have the faith to lead them? There is a drastic need for us as men to overcome the emotional and spiritual impotence that is hindering our hearts and our homes so that we can pass living faith on to our boys.

There is a challenge in front of us as leaders to re-examine what it means to live lives of faith and to begin actively pursuing them. Father offered this same challenge to the people in Isaiah 51, when He said, “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn; look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man, and I blessed him and made him many.”

August 10-12, 2012 is a great opportunity for you and your son to “look to the rock from which you were cut” and to consider on your own need for walking in the steps of the father of our faith, Abraham. It’s a great time to come together as fathers and sons and to learn from one another and our Heavenly Father. It will be a weekend of fun, challenge, study, and encouragement as we work together as fathers to raise up godly sons.
