How God Used Sam

Lisa and I have been working with a great new couple here in Indiana over the last several weeks named Bill and Stephanie. They have been going through a tremendous amount of pain through the last week as many dark secrets have come to light. No matter how many times we see this happen, the pain is unreal to watch and the depth of sin’s grasp is horrific.

But, in the midst of the pain, Lisa and I are privy to some amazing moments where God speaks to people and heals in ways that are simply unimaginable for those who do not serve the Son of God. For those who wear His name, this is what we’ve come to expect. We are all exposed to the providence of God. Last Friday evening, Bill and Stephanie shared an incredible story about how God reached down in lovingkindness and shared simple truths through their five year old son, Sam.

Sam came downstairs to find his mom and dad crying and talking through some heavy stuff. The two of them had been hurting and trying to sort through a myriad of hurt feelings, betrayal, confusion, and shame when Sam began trying to explain how “Jesus had given us our ears and our eyes last”, but then said he wanted to read something to them. He ran upstairs to grab his Bible and came back downstairs to read to his attentive audience of two.

Sam first turned to Matthew 13:13 (NIV), which reads:

“This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not understand.'”

Bill and Stephanie looked at each other at the same time in amazement. He then turned to I John 2:3, 16-17 (NIV):

“We know that we have come to know Him if we obey his commands… For everything in the world, the cravings of the sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does- comes not from the Father, but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.”

Next, Sam turned over to I John 1:9-10 and read:

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.”

He then stopped. After watching his parents’ pride, amazement, and wonder, sat quietly and did not turn to another scripture. He had seen the attention he was receiving and didn’t go on reading more and more to get more of it. He sat still. Bill and Stephanie knew immediately this had been received from God. They were hearing from God himself, through the innocence of their 5 year old son.

They had lived in sin for so long, that when all of the truth came pouring out, nothing felt real. All of the lies, shame, and pain. It was all on the table and they needed answers fast, before they completely lost it. And God, in His perfection, knew the time was right to reveal where they had been all along. He used their son to drop them to their knees and bring them back to him. He used their son, Sam, to glorify His name.

In the midst of your pain, there is hope. Your pride, lust, and cravings in this dark world will be exposed soon enough. Whether it be from your own confession or as you stand face to face with the Judge, they’ll be out and you’ll have to deal with them. Either confess them now, and allow Him to heal the pain, or suffer the consequences later. He’s waiting. What will you do?

UPDATE: I talked with Bill and Stephanie last night and this clarification was given to me: Sam’s parents haven’t read the Bible with him regularly. He knows very little of the Bible. He didn’t do this because he knew the word. He was just an instrument.

  2. Thank you Derek and Lisa for the work you both do for the Lord.. This story gave me goose bumps.. Our Savior works in myterious ways.. God Bless you Both, as he works through you..
    Love you.

  3. This story is an example of Matthew 4:1-11, the teaching of Jesus on how we are to fight the Devil who accosts us.

It is to fight off piddly circumstances in favor of the love of God Who guides us through the wilderness REGARDLESS of the circumstances.

In this case, a 5-year-old boy reminded them of their place. The Word of God came through a 5-year-old. Goes to show that God can speak through the most unexpected, IF we listen, knowing His voice.
