Family Update: Our Son Is Born!

Our family is celebrating the birth of our newborn son, Josiah Kemp Guyer. He was born on October 26th, 2008. He weighed 6lbs 15oz and was 20 1/4 inches long.

I thought you all might enjoy my version of our drive to the hospital, as it’s given Lisa and I some good laughs:

We laid the kids down for a nap on Sunday afternoon and were talking on the couch when the really heavy contractions started. We’ve ben expecting him for over a month now because Lisa has constantly been in pre-term labor. No matter how prepped you are, it’s still a mad dash.

We woke the kids up and threw them in the car with the rest of our stuff and made the eventful run to the hospital. The poor kids were awakened from a heavy sleep and thrown into the car where their panicky and struggling mother sat in the front seat screaming. Poor Lisa was tossing and turning with every contraction and every scream set the tension bar a little bit higher. Our two kids, now 16 months and 2 1/2 years old, watched in fear as it sounded like someone was getting into big trouble, and mom was not happy.

From the back, I could hear Malachi, our 2 1/2 year old son, begin complaining of an upset stomach. So, in between contractions I began to pray for him and to ask God for peace for all of us as we got closer to the hospital. While the upset stomach appeared to have gone away, the fear of mommy did not and neither did her screaming. Rather, it got more intense. I can recall at least three times over the next ten minutes where Malachi asked to “pray again”. So, we did.

As we approached the hospital, Malachi began trying to get Lisa’s attention. He was obviously upset, and still not awake, and wanted some consolation. He kept saying, “Mommy? Mommy? Mommy?”. I finally turned, in the middle of one of Lisa’s contractions and lightly said “shhhhhh”…

With a heart as cold as ice, Lisa turned to me with what appeared to be the burning eyes of Satan himself, and said “Don’t you tell me to be quiet”.

I turned back around and sat quietly until the contraction finished and with a slight smile on my face said, “Um, Honey? I wasn’t talking to you. I was talking to Malachi.”

Despite her deep pain and crazy hormones, she got a good laugh that probably pushed him another 2 or 3 cm further along, and we went inside where Lisa delivered our 3rd child.

Both Lisa and Josiah are very healthy! We’re thankful to God for the new blessings we’re experiencing in our little boy and the continual rise of our home. Praise God!
