Age of Affairs

You might call it adultery. Someone else might call it a physical affair. Someone else might say marital infidelity. However you term it, it’s cheating…and it’s everywhere. We are living in an Age of Affairs.

We hear nearly every day about relationships being destroyed by affairs of every shape and kind. Take a second to google anything you can think about affairs, and you’ll find wives who are thinking about cheating on their husbands, mistresses concerned about whether their lover will ever leave their spouse, husbands wanting to leave their wives for their lover if it weren’t for the kids, and wives having numerous emotional affairs. Watch the President of the United States fool around with numerous women while leading our country and deny it. Check out the tabloids to see movie star after movie star get caught in affairs and leave one spouse for the next. Who is surprised? With movies and shows entitled “Desperate Housewives”, “A Woman’s Guide to Adultery”, “Sex and the City”, “Striptease”, and “Indecent proposal”, who is surprised? One spouse cheats on the other and everyone smiles and moves on. We watch it for a half hour, hour, or even all day long, and think nothing of it. Sadly enough, we watch church leaders doing the same thing as they fall into sexual immorality of every kind. They’re too scared to “come down to the front” for the “altar call” to admit they’re struggling with temptation or even deep in sin, so they just keep going.

When Lisa first told me she had been cheating, I really began hating those shows, films, and stories. I hated the thought that things like that were once amusing to people. I can remember thinking nothing of them at times before that point in my life. Looking back, I realize how foolish this was and still is today. We’ve become desensitized to all of it.

It’s the norm, but it’s not funny. It’s not amusing. It’s not entertaining. It’s real and it’s sin. People are hurting. Homes are suffering. God is being completely ignored and mocked around every turn.

While you and I sit and watch these shows, movies, and icons in American culture mocking the foundation of marriage as God designed, our neighbors, friends, and family are out doing those very things. If you don’t know anyone who has suffered from an extramarital affair (physical or emotional), who struggles with pornography, who is desperate for some attention from their spouse, then your head is buried in the sand. It takes no time at all to find desperate husbands and wives who are closer to cheating and divorce than you could ever imagine.

Wake up, you sleeper. The home has been destroyed. Not just mine. It’s happening all around us.

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.”

Hebrews 13:4

We’re living in an age of Affairs. It’s time for a revolution in the home. It’s time for the fall to end. It’s time for the Rise of the Home.

  1. Thank you all for saying it like it is, no matter what it’s called. This is a serious issue attacking our homes. I’ve linked to you at my blog, to try to help spread the word. May you reach many hearts for God’s will.

  2. Thanks so much, LisaM. It’s encouraging to know people believe in what we’re doing and the links will help to spread the word. God bless!

  3. […] Very soon, I’d like to post what the scriptures say about being joyful and how to get there. I’d also like to share some of the things that I have done to get out of this negative pit that I’ve been in. In the meantime, take a good look at yourself in the mirror (or in some recent candid photos). Figure out if you are the woman your husband might run to or run away from. […]
